Blogging Tools Compared

This debate is about as interesting to me as Coke vs. Pepsi, but I’ll point to Mashable’s linkbait comparison of the new MT release and WordPress. I am interested in playing with the new MT interface and talking with Mule about how they tried to tackle the problem of blog workflow. When picking a platform, I’d look not just at a snapshot of the current feature list. Instead, I’d look at who is using the platform to do what *you* want to do with it. I’d look at the size and vigor of the community developing for it, and gauge how quickly things get fixed, added and fully developed for the platform. And you should look at what your team is comfortable keeping up with.

Long ago, I stopped waiting for MT and started working primarily with WP. (I still do an MT project occasionally if that’s the legacy system in place.) I’m quite pleased with it, though I think social network elements are needed, the interface needs help, more microformat support baked in, etc.

The cool thing is, all I have to do is go round up some friends and we can extend it as we like. I hope that the open version of MT ends up being an anchor for the same kind of activity. We’ll all win.

What I would like to know is current market numbers for blog platforms. How many WP.com users? How many WP.org? How many MT? How many TypePad? LJ? Etc. Anyone know current numbers?
